Maya Nairobi Brown

Multimedia Journalist and Reporter

Maya Nairobi Brown is a four-time Emmy-nominated multimedia journalist and on-air reporter for WCSC Live 5 News in Charleston, South Carolina. She pitches, shoots, writes, edits and reports stories on a daily basis serving the Lowcountry area.

Prior to moving to South Carolina, Maya was a multimedia reporter for NBCU Academy’s Storytellers, where she highlights changemakers and solutions to social issues affecting underserved communities. Her work — which she produced, shot and edited — has appeared on NBC News NOW, NBC’s “Early Today” and local affiliates. Previously, she was a social newsgathering reporter with NBC News. She received her master’s in journalism from New York University and her bachelor’s in journalism and political science from Stony Brook University.

She sees an underrepresentation in topics surrounding social justice and minorities and hopes to fill that gap by becoming a national television correspondent. She feels that producing news that impacts people or tells a story that needs to be told is an amazing feeling. Journalism allows her to continue learning, meet new people everyday and most importantly aid in letting the public know what needs to be heard.

She is also an award-winning journalist winning a Hearst award, a PCLI award and a FOLIO award for her senior capstone on educational inequities on Long Island. She also received NAHJ’s Ada Lourdes Vigo Afro-Latino Scholarship in 2022 and RDTNA’s Ed Bradley Scholarship in 2021. She is a member of NAHJ, NABJ and SPJ. She is also the Secretary on the NAHJ NYC Board.
